It’s been a crazy week in Major League Baseball with the trading deadline ending July 31st. During the week some of the biggest names in baseball were traded, including future Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr., Pudge Rodriquez and Mark Texeira.
Contending teams, Yankees, Angels and White Sox all seem to have helped themselves for the stretch run of the 2008 season. We break down some of the trades and discuss the latest baseball news with our baseball analyst—the former General Manger of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kevin Malone.
We also talk about real life issues from the perspective of a veteran player and a youngster. First we visit with veteran pitcher Paul Byrd of the Cleveland Indians. It’s been difficult for Paul and his team this season.
We also visit with an outstanding young shortstop in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, Ben Zobrist. Ben has been bouncing up and down between the Major Leagues and the Rays AAA team in Durham. After playing well earlier this month he was sent back to AAA for a few weeks. Ben is a bright young prospect and has taken a different route to the Major Leagues. We hear about his journey as well as his thoughts on the Rays and their ability to contend in the American League East.
It’s also been a newsworthy time in NASCAR. In recent weeks, Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have announced that they’re changing teams. Last week, NASCAR was frustrated by tire issues in Indianapolis. This week, the Sprint Cup series is in Pocono. We talk about NASCAR with our racing analyst, Ron Pegram.
