Interviewed by: Frank Giardina
Last weekend the mid-west lost a legendary college football coach. Former Miami (O), Indiana and Northwestern coach, John Pont, passed away last Tuesday in Oxford, Ohio at the age of 80. He had been battling cancer.
Pont is known for coaching at schools where it was tough to win. He was the head coach at Yale, in addition to Miami, Indiana and Northwestern.
On this edition of Sports Spectrum Today, we talk with one of Pont's former players at Indiana, Mike Deal. Deal played on one of the great Cinderella teams in college football history. The 1967 Indiana Hoosiers shocked all of college football, by winning the Big Ten championship with a sophomore-laden team. They then went on to the Rose Bowl where they lost 14-3 to a great USC team led by All American running back O. J. Simpson.
They are the last Indiana team to play in a Rose Bowl. Dan talks about the Hoosiers shocking success and the excitement that took place on campus and across the state of Indiana. He also talks about coach Pont and his coaching style.
Don’t miss Mike Deals memories of one of the few coaches that has brought football glory to the Indiana University, John Pont, on Sports Spectrum Today.
