The famed Indianapolis 500, an event that started in 1911 is one of America's greatest sports traditions. On this edition of Sports Spectrum Today, we capture some of the history of the 500 with long time Indianapolis broadcaster, Howdy Bell.
Howdy was a part of the Indy 500 radio broadcast team for over 25 years. He talks about the history and importance of the event that helped make Sunday's race so significant. He also talks about the passion that the city has for the 500.
Howdy talks about the most glamorous names in Indy history—Parnelli Jones, Jimmy Clarke, Gordon Johncock, Rick Mears, and Sam Hornish, Jr. All of these drivers and many others have contributed to the history of the Indianapolis 500. Howdy considers legendary driver, A. J. Foyt the best driver in Indy racing history.
