"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV).
IDEA: We are to "run with endurance" the race that is set before us.
PURPOSE: To help listeners appreciate what is involved in thinking of the Christian life as a long-distance race in contrast to other pictures of life.

Life is a walk in a park.
Life is a fight of faith.
Life is a pilgrimage.
Do you have pictures in your head by which you describe life?
II. What is the image that the writer of the letter to the Hebrews uses when talking about the Christian life?
