A DISCUSSION ON THE DISCIPLINE OF TOUGH LOVE

"Love is kind" (1 Corinthians 13:4).

IDEA: Redemptive kindness may help us in deciding what actions to take toward someone else.

Do you find that at some times it’s difficult to know how to show kindness to another person?

I. Do you think there is a difference in the way we show kindness to a child and to an adult?  What would the differences be?

We recognize that we treat different types of people in different ways.

We sometimes treat the same people differently in different situations.

Sometimes health makes a difference.

Sometimes our state of emotion makes a difference.

Sometimes our resources can make a difference.

We often want to be kind, but don’t know exactly what action we should take.

II. God’s patience and kindness are redemptive. They are designed for our best.

This is a principle that should affect the kindness that we show to others.

Would my action help or hinder a relationship to God?

Would my action help or hinder a relationship to myself or others?

III. Think of different situations and how we might apply the principle:

The way we deal with our children at different times in their lives: can saying “no” to them be kind?

The way we treat people who are hurting: is sympathy always kind?

Is rebuke ever kind?  Is rebuke ever unkind?  What makes the difference?

How does the principle help us examine the motives that lie behind our being patient or kind?
