Awesome, Not Frightening
When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid.. —Revelation 1:17

I was a private in the Army medical corps when I was told that the colonel in charge wanted to see me. I became very nervous because I had never talked with such a high-ranking officer. I wondered why he wanted to talk to me and hoped I could display a bit of poise in his presence.

A far more awesome encounter is awaiting me, however. One day I will stand in the presence of Christ for His evaluation of my life (2 Cor. 5:10). The realization that "all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account" (Heb. 4:13) adds to my uneasiness.

I have some apprehension too when I think of how the apostle John responded when he saw Jesus in His dazzling glory. He "fell at His feet as dead" (Rev. 1:17). But then I remember what the Lord said to John. The One who died on the cross and who rose from the grave touched His awestruck servant and gently said, "Do not be afraid."

Those words are comforting for all who believe in Jesus. He died in our place so we could be forgiven. By rising from the dead, He broke death's power over us so we could be free to serve Him.

The prospect of seeing Jesus is indeed awesome. But praise God, it need not be frightening.  — Herbert Vander Lugt

To see the face of Christ my Lord!
Oh, dear assurance of His Word
That He for me prepares a place
Where someday I shall see His face. —Chisholm

If you know Jesus as Savior you have no reason to fear Him as Judge.
