In my kitchen hangs a poster that reads, "Housework is something you do that nobody notices unless you don't do it."
The truth behind that statement applies to more than just housework. People seem to notice our failures--our anger, impatience, criticism, or self-pity. But who notices when, by God's grace, we get it right? We feel that nobody sees or appreciates. Sometimes that may be true, except for one comforting reality: God sees and He appreciates!
That reality can also be a source of security. According to the apostle Paul, we are ultimately serving Jesus Christ (Col. 3:17,23-24). We are to serve Him with an attitude of thanksgiving (v.17) and wholeheartedness (v.23). The Lord not only sees and values everything we do, but He also will reward us (v.24).
Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China, believed that Christians should do all things wholeheartedly, not just those actions that can be seen. He reasoned, "As our Father makes many a flower to bloom unseen in the lonely desert, [let us] do all that we can do, as under His eye, though no other eye ever take note of it."
Remember, Someone is watching! — Joanie Yoder
Though others may not observe us
And see how we serve God today,
Our job as servants of Jesus
Is to please Him in every way. --JDB
Instead of living for human acclaim, do everything in Jesus' name.
