Meter readers brave wind, rain, dogs, and dark basements to check gas, electric, and water usage in homes. But in some cities today, gas meters have radio transmitters. Mobile vans equipped with radio receivers and computers can collect readings by simply driving by. While a good meter reader could check 250 meters a day, a van cruising residential streets can cover almost 100 times more in the same period.
Yet, such technology is nothing compared to God's ability to know everything about all of us, all of the time. If mere mortals can devise means of drive-by monitoring, how much more can the infinite, ever-present God know all our ways and thoughts!
Jesus described Himself to the church of Thyatira as "the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire" (Rev. 2:18). It is with infinite and intimate knowledge that He says to us, "I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience" (v.19). And with that knowledge, He says, "I have a few things against you" (v.20).
Is any thought more reassuring--or sobering? Jesus' eyes are like fire, burning away all coverings. This truth should humble us as we look for His return. — Mart De Haan
Take control of my life today,
Let Thy will be also mine,
That in each thought and word and deed,
I shall be forever Thine. --Sees
Those who know God will be humble; those who know themselves cannot be proud.
