Psalm 124 is a look back at the goodness of the Lord in delivering and protecting His people. Angry pagan leaders were ready to swallow Israel alive, but the Lord intervened to rescue His chosen ones. Twice the grateful psalmist proclaimed, "If it had not been the Lord who was on our side . . ." (vv.1-2).
When we who believe in Jesus look back, we can say the same thing. Once I was a passenger in a car as it skidded across a glare-ice expressway toward a massive pile-up. The Lord saw fit to keep us from plowing into that tangled wreckage.
There have been times when I faced strong temptations. If it had not been for the Lord, I would not have had the strength to say no.
And a few years ago I labored through a prolonged period of emptiness, painful memories, suicidal guilt, and hopelessness. If it had not been for the help of God, I would not have made it through that dark valley.
"If it had not been the Lord . . . ." I've said it many times. I'm quite sure you have too. When new afflictions, hardships, doubts, or temptations arise, let's remember the Lord's grace in the past and say with the psalmist, "Our help is in the name of the Lord" (v.8). — David C. Egner
